Quotes and Pictures to Use for Journal Writing

Since writing will be emphasized with the new SOLs I have a collection of quotes and pictures on several sites that you can use for "Do Nows" to start the class.  You can use verbal quotes or pictures or both to have students respond.  Please tell them they need at least 10 good sentences as a valid response.  I would walk around and check to make sure they are writing in sentences.  I would also periodically check these for a classwork grade.  I would have the quote or picture you want to use projected on the overhead screen when the students walk into the room so they can get started.

I would also have some questions that students could use that would be appropriate for students to ponder in relationship to the image/words that were chosen.  This will help those who say they don't know what to write.  I would try to have at least 5-10 questions.  This way no one can say they don't know what to write.

After you have given them enough time please have a few share their writing.  Make sure they are reading what they wrote...not just talking extemporaneously off the top of their heads.
